The Dev Team has released a new version of Redsn0w. This time Redsn0w 0.9.9 beta 6 allows you to skip all the messing around with downloading and selecting iOS firmware. None of this is required for this version, if this is all gibber jabber to you, don’t worry just continue on, as this does not concern this version anymore.

This is a tethered jailbreak, meaning you have to connect your device to the computer each time it restarts and boot it into tethered mode. The redsn0w release works in OSX and Windows, in windows run as administrator to avoid any problems.

Step 1.

Update your device to iOS 5, first head to iTunes.com and grab and install the latest iTunes. Then simply connect your device to USB and let iTunes upgrade your device to iOS 5.

Step 2.

Once you are updated to iOS 5, we can start the jailbreak process, first you will need to start up Redsn0w that you downloaded from the top right corner of this article.

Step 3.

Next, Click the Jailbreak Button

Step 4.

Once you see the instructions to put the device into DFU mode, put the device into DFU mode

Step 5.

At this point, redsn0w will see your device in DFU mode and it’ll start working. Let Redsn0w do its work, when complete you will reboot and have a Cydia icon on the desktop. However you will not be able to launch it, why ? because you need to start up redsn0w again and boot it into tethered jailbreak mode, because the device rebooted at the end of the jailbreak, this means that you need to boot it again with redsn0w to get access to the jailbreak features, i.e. Cydia.

To boot into tethered mode from now on,

Start redsn0w and select the extra folder, this time select boot tethered option and again put your device into dfu mode, this will start your device and you will see a pine apple instead of a regular apple during the boot process, this is how you know you are booting into jailbreak mode

So you are now jailbroken, if your Cydia is white its because you didn’t do a tethered boot after the jailbreak.

Now that you are jailbroken. Your next step is to add some cydia sources & cydia apps. We have a great cydia sources list that you can find here. Also don't forget to check out some of the coolest cydia apps in our new app section. If you need help adding a cydia source click here for a video how-to.
