Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 11 has been released and supports iOS firmware 5.0 & 5.0.1. This is a tethered jailbreak, meaning you have to connect your device to the computer each time it restarts and boot it into tethered mode. The sn0wbreeze release works only in Windows, and you should run as administrator to avoid any problems. Although we’ve already seen redsn0w jailbreak 5.0.1 already in windows and mac, most unlockers are more familiar with sn0wbreeze as they have often have used it in the past to update to the latest firmware while preserving the baseband. Meaning you can get on the latest iOS without upgrading your modem firmware. This is essential for the unlocking tools to remain in tact and working.
Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 11 supports iOS 5.0.1 tethered jailbreak on the following devices
- iPhone 3GS (new bootom), iPhone 4 GSM
- iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G
- iPad 1
Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 11 supports iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak on the following devices
- iPhone 3GS (old bootrom)
Now lets go through the tutorial.
1. Backup your software, connect to iTunes and backup your device, just incase you want to restore, or if something fails during the jailbreak process.
2. Download Sn0wbreeze from the top right corner of this page, and download the 5.0.1 firmware for your specific device from our firmware section.
3. Start Sn0wbreeze and select the Expert Mode
4. You should now get prompted to select your firmware, select the firmware you downloaded in STEP 2, your selection will be verified and you should get a green checkmark and blue arrow to goto the next step
5. Select build and wait for the firmware to build
Now what you have here is a custom firmware for your device which will be jailbroken and which will not update your baseband.
To install the firmware simply
- connect your device to your Mac or PC
- put your device in to DFU mode
- click shift(pc) or option(mac) + restore in iTunes and select the firmware that you have just created.
You need iTunes 10.5+ to install the 5.0.1 firmware, you can download iTunes 10.5 here.
Now give it some time, you should get a bunch of progress bars on your device but in about 10 minutes it should be restored and jailbroken.
After everything is installed and your device reboots and activates you will get a iOS 5 activation screen. Follow the instruction to setup your device.
Now to get into jailbroken tethered state.
During the install a folder was created on your desktop, called iBooty.
Start iBooty, select your device and firmware and then follow the iBooty instructions on how to get into DFU mode. Once iBooty v2.2 detects your device in DFU mode it will then reboot your device into a jailbreak tethered state. Meaning all your jailbreak options will work as long as you don’t turn off your device. If your battery does happen to die or your reboot your device you will have to connect your device back up to the pc and run iBooty v2.2 again to boot it into tethered jailbreak state.
btw : When you initially jailbreak your device, you might be able to reboot and still have use of your device just without the jailbreak features. However, once you install some Cydia hacks that are activated during the boot process, you will no longer be able to boot your device without the use of iBooty since it will just be stuck in the apple loop.
