Today I want to take a minute and talk about iFaith. iH8sn0w has updated his iFaith software to version 1.4 which is now fully compatible with iOS 5.0, 5.0.1 and 5.1 betas.

Did you know ? -> when you upgrade your device to Apple’s current firmware, today it’s 5.0.1, you will no longer be able to install any previous firmware, such as 5.0 or 4.x

Apple has been blocking downgrade access on iOS devices for quite some time now. This is a great way for them to keep you locked on the latest iOS firmware. But why ? Well if everyone could downgrade their devices, there would be alot more jailbreakers out there, now wouldn’t there ? And well Apple won’t approve of that, hence they introduced the SHSH firmware signing process. Basically when you connect your device to iTunes and then try to do a firmware restore, iTunes sends out a SHSH request based your device’s UDID. It then communicates with Apple’s servers to get an approval, the device is either eligible to be put on that firmware or it is not. In most cases you wont get an approval unless you are going to install the current firmware, unless you are a developer, then you will get approved for the newly released betas as well.

So if you want to restore your iDevice to a previous iOS, the process will fail unless you have the SHSH blobs for that particular iOS version saved and use such tools as TinyUmbrella.

But, saving the blobs for an iOS version can only be done as long as Apple still signs that iOS. When a new iOS version is being released, Apple stops signing the previous version and if you didn’t save your blobs you can kiss your downgrade goodbye. Here is where iFaith takes care of this problem.

If your iDevice is susceptible to the Limera1n jailbreak ( all iDevices except iPad 2, iPhone 4GS ) you can use iFaith to backup the SHSH blobs from the device, even if Apple has stopped signing the firmware !

Ok here are steps for dumping your SHSH files. This is windows only for now, but a mac release in in the works.

Step 1: Download iFaith

Step 2: Open iFaith and Click Dump SHSH Blobs and then Click Proceed and Click Let’s Go afterwards.

Step 3: Follow the DFU Instructions to place your device in DFU Mode.

Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
You device should now be in DFU mode

Step 4: Once the DFU mode on the device is detected, iFaith will automatically start the process of dumping SHSH blob. This may take a while.

Step 5: When completed, iFaith will ask you where to locally save the SHSH.
