One of the cool new features in iOS 5 is the new notification area. And although it does alert you about new tweets, sms, or emails, it won’t however display any RSS feeds. Well today we’ll look at the Cydia App called RSSWidget and how to get it installed and configured on your iDevice. For those of you who are on iOS 5 and don’t know, to access the notification area, simply swipe down from the top of your phone anywhere to get the UI to pop open.
In order to get this tweak working on your device, you must be jailbroken. If you have not jailbroke your device, head over to our chart, select your device, and follow the tutorial to jailbreak your device.
There is 2 things you need to get done here.
First we need to download the RSSWidget from Cydia. Simply launch cydia, search for rsswidget and install it.
Now when you swipe down you will notice that you have a nice rss feed running from 9to5 mac. However just like me, you must be puzzled on where to update the feed used to generate the listings. Well there is no option, as this App is awaiting an update.
But there is a work around. You will need to update the com.idevhaice.rsswidget.plist file either using iFIle or SSH. This file contains the feed URL which is what you need to update the location of the feed.
SSH Method
STEP 1. SSH into your iPhone using your favorite FTP client and browse to / System / Library / WeeAppPlugins / RSSWidget.bundle /
STEP 2. Now you have to open com.idevhaice.rsswidget.plist
STEP 3. Now simply change the URL under Item 1 – Defaults
